Things to Avoid

We want your visit to be fun, easy, and stress-free—so here are a few tips to help you avoid common mishaps while exploring the city:

🚗 Rush Hour Traffic

Avoid major highways from 7–9 AM and 4–7 PM on weekdays—Houston traffic has no mercy.

Areas to Be Cautious In

Like any big city, some areas are best avoided, especially after dark.

- Stick to well-lit, busier parts of town—Downtown near Discovery Green, Montrose, and The Heights are all safe bets.

- We recommend avoiding late-night wandering in parts of: Third Ward, Sunnyside, certain stretches of the East End or near industrial zones.

- Downtown is generally safe, but it can feel deserted at night in certain blocks—stay closer to the restaurant/bar zones or travel in groups if unsure.

🦟 Mosquitoes & Weather Mood Swings

Yes, even in December. Bring bug spray and a light rain jacket or umbrella—you might need both on the same day.

🚨 Parking Tickets & Towing

Downtown, Midtown, and Montrose are ticket traps. Don’t risk it—read signs carefully, even on weekends.
